Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and worldwide…
- 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70
- More than 2 people die of skin cancer in the United States every hour
- Having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma
- When detected early, the 5-year survival rate for melanoma is 99 percent
The last point is key! Skin cancer can be treated safely and quickly with early detection. That is why yearly skin checks are critical. Even every 6 months if you spend a lot of time in the sun or notice any unusual moles or spots on your skin or have a history of skin cancer. Also, protecting yourself from the sun is the first line of defense: sunscreen (broad spectrum and SPF 30 or higher), reapplying sunscreen at least every 2 hours when outside, hats, long clothing to cover the skin (when possible). These are all things you can do to minimize sun exposure and your risk of developing skin cancer.
