Varicose Veins - swollen, throbbing legs

Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted veins, primarily in the legs. They indicate that the valves of the veins are not functioning properly, causing chronic venous insufficiency. Damaged vein valves make it difficult for blood to return to the heart efficiently.

Symptoms include:

  • Burning

  • Throbbing

  • Swelling

  • Muscle cramps / restless leg syndrome

  • Achy or heavy feelings in the legs

Those affected:

  • Females

  • Family history of varicose veins

  • History of pregnancy

  • Standing for long periods of time

  • Obesity

  • Age over 50

Chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins are one of the most under diagnosed conditions in the United States. Approximately 60% of Americans will develop varicose veins.

The first steps towards treatment is trying conservative therapy: exercise, elevating your legs, and wearing thigh high compression socks with at least 20-30 mm Hg of pressure. When that fails, it is time for an ultrasound in our office to identify where blood reflux is happening and the size of the affected veins. When certain criteria are met, we have different treatment options that can be processed through your insurance with prior authorization.
