What causes facial veins?

Facial veins are small blood vessels at the surface of the skin. They are sometimes called telangiectasias or spider veins. Things that contribute to their development are:

  • Advancing in age
  • Rosacea
  • Chronic sun damage
  • Living in sunny climates such as Orange County California
  • Hereditary factors
  • Allergies
  • Inflammation levels in your body
  • Hormonal changes
  • Triggers like spicy food, alcohol and stress

Sometimes an underlying medical condition is present as opposed to just a cosmetic issue. It is important to have an accurate diagnosis as to what is causing the veins to appear before beginning treatment.

What treatments are available for facial veins in redness?

Fortunately, a variety of effective treatments are now available. The first step begins with good skincare and a daily sunscreen of SPF 30 or more. One should also avoid triggers that cause flushing of blood vessels such as hot liquids, alcohol and spicy foods.

When conservative measures don’t work, a variety of creams and oral medications can help.
Some of these are even covered by insurance plans when there is an underlying medical condition such as rosacea.

For complete clearance and a drastic reduction in facial veins, a series of cosmetic treatment is often needed. The most effective treatments for reducing the appearance of facial veins is laser therapy. Lasers such as the pulse dye laser are highly effective in treating small red veins in the cheeks and nose. The laser specifically targets just the vein and facial redness leaving the remaining skin unaffected and fully intact. This allows for a highly effective treatment without any downtime.

Is cosmetic sclerotherapy appropriate for my facial veins?

It is rare to need sclerotherapy for your facial veins. Due to their high efficacy and virtually no downtime, lasers are how facial veins are primarily treated. For small red veins particularly on the cheeks and nose, the pulse dye laser is extremely helpful. For larger, deeper blue veins, a differential laser known as the Nd:YAG laser is best. Depending on the extent of damage, a series of laser treatments can result in dramatic improvement in the appearance of facial veins.

As skin care experts, we are able to tailor a variety of medical and cosmetic treatments to help you achieve clear skin and eliminate facial veins.

How is a laser treatment for facial veins performed?

They are treated as simple outpatient visits during a 30-minute appointment. We first clean your skin and then apply a topical numbing cream. After a few minutes, the anesthesia takes effect and the laser treatment can comfortably begin.

The laser is calibrated to your specific skin tone, amount of veins, and color of the veins. It then glides over your skin targeting just the veins and facial redness. Heat seals the unwanted vessels while leaving the rest of your skin intact and unaffected. Depending on the size and color of the veins, we will use either the pulse dye laser, the Nd:YAG laser, or a combination of both.

There is usually no pain associated with this procedure. After completion, calming cream is applied to the skin. Strict sun protection is needed for the rest of the day. Most people noticed some swelling and redness that resembles a sunburn. This was resolved after a day or two.

There are no open wounds, bleeding, crusting, scarring or downtime with these procedures. You can resume normal activities immediately and go back to work after the procedure. They

How many laser treatments will I need to see results?

After one treatment you will see an immediate improvement. Depending on the extent of damage you may need a series of 1-3 treatments. Many of our patients return for an annual laser touch up as a part of their routine dermatology care. We are also able to combine this with medical treatments when necessary to help you achieve maximum clearance.
